Experimental Architecture Biennial - Volume#2: New Manifesto

After the industrial revolution, the digital evolution and in today´s postdigital era, we try to explore and understand the origin of logic and techniques of architecture, design and art through science, nature, technology and human resources. We focus on speculative and digital coded realms based on algorithms, new synthetics and generative methods, which are able to expand the custom formal language and approach in design. We create a new range of tools that are able to disrupt, optimize, simulate and create coherent emergence of new beginnings of human’s perception.

The main focus of this exhibition and symposium is on digital culture, new topics related to digital paradigms of 21st Century and looking forward for new creative visions in Architecture, Design and Art.

Human necessity to understand complex behaviors in nature is one of the gears that has been driving development of computation and technology in last 60 year. The ability to easily simulate physical processes and interactions of materials has brought architectural discipline closer to computer science and engineering, and having the chance to utilize these tools in early phases of design, architects can now generate a whole new set of topologies in service of performance and immediate fabrication.

Folded Topologies workshop will explore the relationship between physical properties of EVA sheets (Ethylene vinyl acetate) and its digital surface counterpart behavior through simulated folding mechanism. Participants will be learning dynamic simulation in Autodesk Maya using nCloth and animation as well as comparing digital results with physical models before applying their method and design on small competition project for the final outcome. The workshop outcome is in form of small scale installation created with white EVA sheets. Depending on number of participants, proposals will be individual or by group from which the most successful design will be chosen for fabrication.

Personal laptop with preinstalled Autodesk Maya (trail version or student edition is sufficient) and/or Rhinoceros, cutters. Basic knowledge of Maya is recommended, but not essential for the workshop.
